Genesis

Possibly one of the most boring, unexciting, and uneventful chapters I have ever read is the chapter titled Genesis. In this chapter, Patrick just goes on about the group’s albums and his opinion on various songs. Even though this was a very short chapter, it seemed to just drag on. I found myself having to reread paragraphs because I would not be paying attention to what I was reading since it was so boring. At least I now know how people feel when I go on about one of my favourite bands. Also, I was confused as to what the significance of this chapter might be.
In an analysis by Julian Murphet, he says that Patrick has an arrogant confidence but he is not really able to control much in his life. He is unable to strangle Luis Carruthers, reserve seats in Dorsia, or handle the Fisher account. The only thing he is able to do is uphold his physical appearance. To Bateman, certain kinds of information and tastes are very important to him. Patrick is trying hard to maintain his mask of sanity and one way to do this is to enthuse over popular music. His musical taste is being used to gauge the degree to which Patrick’s mind has gone over to the conformities of the entertainment industry.
